Faculty members in the Department of Philosophy and Religion have been busy and recognized for excellence. Here are some recent samples:
Sandie Gravett receives a $15,000 grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion to find ways to improve teaching about Christianity in large southern public institutions. (Read Story)
Kim Hall's article "Queerness, Disability, and the Vagina Monologues," just appeared in print in "Hypatia: Journal of Feminist Philosophy" 20 (1), pp. 99-119.
Kim Hall convened the Disability Studies Cluster at the first Arts and Sciences Humanities Day. In addition to advancing her work in Disability Studies, Kim's leadership in this interdisciplinary research cluster communicated to a large audience the exceptional contributions that faculty can make to the ongoing discussion and dissemination of original research.
Alan Hauser is editing Recent Research on the Major Prophets, which will be published in Fall 2007 by Sheffield Phoenix Press. It analyzes contemporary interpretive methods and studies treating the three major Old Testament prophets.
Alan Hauser edited A History of Biblical Interpretation, Vol. I: The Ancient Period, which was published by Eerdmans Press in 2003. The second volume, treating the medieval period, will be published in 2008, and the third volume, treating the early modern period, is being prepared.
Alan Hauser is Senior Editor of the journal "Currents in Biblical Research." The journal is published in three issues per year by SAGE publications. The journal presents contemporary methodologies and studies on particular books or topics. The journal is widely used by biblical scholars.
William M. Hutchins has translated Fadhil al-Azzawi's The Last of the Angels and this translated is schedule to be released in July 2008.
Jesse Taylor has published two articles in the The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Management: Volume, Business Ethics. The articles are "Racism" and "Exploitation."
Kim Hall was nominated for the SGA Advisor Award.
Alan Hauser was recently elected as President of the NCAA Athletics Representative Association. This prominent national office will bring increased recognition to Appalachian academics and athletics. (Read Story)
Conrad Ostwalt is Executive Director of the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR). Sandie Gravett is the Deputy Director. (Read Story)
The Department has had 2 winners in the past five years of the Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Arts and Sciences: Congratulations to Dr. Ray Ruble and Dr. Alan Hauser for their recognition as outstanding teachers.
Three faculty members in our department have been awarded General Education Summer Faculty Grants. Kim Hall, Patrick Rardin, and Shawn Arthur all were awarded grants for developing model classes as part of the on-going effort to revise our General Education Curriculum.
Three faculty members in our department have been nominated for the Outstanding Advisor Award in the College of Arts and Sciences. Shawn Arthur, Tom Ellis, and Jack Kwong have been nominated by their advisees for the award. Comments on the nominations letter are laudatory and praises Drs. Arthur, Ellis, and Kwong for their dedication and time.
